December Director Spotlight: Joslyn Rose Lyons

Joslyn Rose Lyons has directed and produced a diverse range of Award-Winning content in film and television for more than a decade, including work with BET, MTV, UNINTERRUPTED, Warner Bros. Pictures, Lionsgate and SHOWTIME.



In August, Variety shared a press announcement for Stand, an upcoming documentary feature directed by Joslyn for Showtime Sports Documentary Films. The film, which will premiere in early 2023, explores the personal and professional struggles of basketball star Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and features exclusive interviews with several basketball and entertainment stars including Stephen Curry, Steve Kerr, Shaquille O’Neal, Jalen Rose, Mahershala Ali and Ice Cube.


Joslyn was invited by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be a Guest Panelist on their Academy Gold Rising Program, and is one of the 2022 top 6 Finalists for the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Joslyn Rose Lyons has directed and produced a diverse range of Award-Winning content in film and television for more than a decade, including work with BET, MTV, STARZ, Lionsgate, Warner Bros Pics., and SHOWTIME.


Joslyn served as a Producer on Speaking Truth to Power (Lionsgate/STARZ), which featured Barbara Lee, Ayanna Presley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Alice Walker, Van Jones, Cory Booker, and Danny Glover, winning Outstanding Documentary at the 2022 NAACP Image Awards. She teamed on the film with #TakeTheLead, STARZ's commitment to amplifying narratives by, about and for women.


Joslyn Rose directed and produced the first music matters showcase for the Grammys at CAA. She also produced the BET Awards celebrity basketball game with a star-studded cast including Nick Cannon, Chris Brown, Lil Rel Howery, Angela Yee, and Jemelle Hill.


Joslyn has directed and produced music videos and music content featuring artists including Common, RZA Wu-Tang Clan, Robert Glasper, Mahershala Ali, E-40, Chad Hugo (N.E.R.D./Neptunes), Talib Kweli, Vince Staples, and more. Joslyn directed a documentary short for Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award Winning artist Common and his Imagine Justice Organization dedicated to empowering communities and fighting injustice that debuted on Mic.com.


Joslyn Won best film at the One National, Many Voices Muslim American Film Competition for her short film Umi’s Heart, starring Academy Award-winning Mahershala Ali. Joslyn’s short film Looking Glass premiered at SUNDANCE London, and picked up numerous awards including Best Short at The American Film Awards, and TopShorts Best Female Director.


Joslyn picked up the Best Director award at the 7th edition of LA Ind. Women Film Awards for her short film starring Hill Harper and J. Alphonse Nicholson.


Joslyn Rose was invited by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be a Guest Panelist on their Academy Gold Rising Program – committed to amplifying narratives by, about and for women and underrepresented audiences.
